Dongping Daniel Zhu received a BS in Electrical Engineering (Telecommunications) and an MS in EE (Signal Processing) from Dalian University of Technology (DUT), China, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA. He was Instructor at DUT, Staff Scientist at InVision Technologies, Foster City, CA, Senior Scientist at Loral Space & Communications' Globalstar unit, San Jose, CA, and R&D Director at Aptronix, Inc, CA. In 1997 he founded Zaptron Systems, Inc, Sunnyvale, CA, and has since been its CEO and President. Zaptron specializes in data mining and intelligent controls with applications to quality control in industrial manufacturing, product support and diagnostics, database search engines, smart data networks, and intelligent materials design.
In 2000, he is elected the President of SCOBA and serves on tte board of directors. Since 1995, he has been invited and sponsored each year by PRC state Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Liaoning Province and Dalian city government, organizations and companies, to give seminars on IT and business incubators, and consult with industry and hi-tech parks in China. In May 2000, he led an Overseas Chinese Consulting Delegation of 14 members to give seminars in Beijing, Tianjin, Xi'an, Suzhou and Shanghai, sponsored by UNDP TOKTEN Project and MOST/Torch Program Office. He is the Orgnization Committee Chair for the US area for and an invited keynote speaker at Dalian OCS Conference, June 29-July 2.
He has served as reviewer for IEEE international conference on pattern recognition and computer vision, Kluwer-Nijhoff Publishing House of Holland, USDA National Research Grand Program, Associate Editor of Proceedings of 1997 International Conference on Imaging Sciences, Systems and Technology (Las Vegas, USA, 7/97), General Chair of the First International Conference on Multisource-Multisensor Information Fusion (FUSION’98, Las Vegas, USA, 7/98), General Chair of FUSION’99 (Sunnyvale, USA, 7/99), Technical Program Committee of the 2nd International Conference on Intelligent Processing and Manufacturing of Materials (IPMM99, Hawaii, USA, 7/99), Area Chairman on data mining and data fusion at IPMM2001 (vancouver, Canada, 8/01). He is the founder, a Board Director, Vice President and Secretary of the International Society of Information Fusion. He is currently also Associate Dean of Information Technology College at DUT and Adjunct Professor of Information and Controls at Northeast University of China. He has published extensively in IEEE, Academic Press, SPIE, and other international journals and conferences. He is a member of the IEEE Computer Society.
His research experience includes signal and image processing, telecom system modeling, artificial intelligence, machine vision, sensor fusion in GPS positioning, knowledge-based knowledge discovery, diagnostic expert systems, and neurofuzzy information fusion for financial prediction and risk management. His recent interest is in hyper-space data mining applied to DNA chip manufacturing, customer support data mining, stock data mining, and industrial process optimization. He serves as the Principal Investigator on an intelligent image analysis project for US FAA. |
